Wow, I think that might be one of my favorite of your posts, in any thread! That was really nice!
Very well done, sir!

Very good song, too! The thread continues amaze me.
This limiting of the pallet sure is bringing out some good stuff!

Oh... The umpire will probably be along shortly to tell you whether you've met the thread per-requisits. It seems I can't count either B) :P :silly: and I'm too much of a softy. Ahhh.. Well what the heck, it's all good as far as I'm concerned, (number of chords that is). Hey I'm learning one with 13 chords and numerous slash chords, so like 25 or something. Do you think the umpire would notice if I snuck that one in? B) :P ;) (oh...actually I've only got the first verse and chorus down... ).

Oh I just noticed that the umpire has already been. You've done well. :). Woo Hoo.

Beautiful.

Aiaiai, snooze and you loose Shel would say! :( Have actually thought of this song 'Running to stand still', one of my favorites by U2, absolutely love to sing that one and I'd finally would have obeyed the umpire....

Nice one Chris! :)

Wow - you can't turn your back on this thread for a second. OK, it's been 2 days........but still! Thanks to all for your kind comments - I'll get to the specifics in a moment, but first;

Jim; Great to see another post form you - nice going on a great VM tune. I saw him play a gig on the Isle of Lewis at the Hebridean Celtic Festival a few years ago and he may be the grumpiest man in the world. He made me feel like I'm a little ray of sunshine!

Vanessa and Corina; What can I say? More fantastic vocals from the 2 of you - your harmonies are wonderful. They feel like a totally mysterious art form to me and you make it look effortless. Loved it.

Chris; More of what we've come to expect from you, crystal clear vocals and clean unfussy accompaniment. Donovan was never a big favourite of mine (perhaps even more so now, since I saw an interview with him where he actually referred to himself all the way through as Donovan!) but he did write some pretty good songs.

Pierre; I think this is my favourite post of yours - great job - and another one who looks very comfortable standing up with a guitar strap. I may have to work on that myself.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

OK - now to the thank yous.

Daryl; Thanks. Personally, I use it to disguise my lack of musical talent.

Dermot; Glad you enjoyed it. Ha! Do you really think that if I had the power to spy on someone like that I'd choose you??

Craig; Thanks for the kind words. There were a couple of bathroom breaks - but I was trying to keep the post serious........ :)

Mark; Thanks for watching. Hope I didn't blow your cover if you were pretending to work!

Dennis; Thanks - and I hear you, loud and clear!

Abilio; Tea, a waste of time?? I'm sure England and Spain have fought wars for less! Thanks for the kind words. As for the "solo" - I believe the key changes, from C to something that isn't C. Maybe A? The final note is an F# so I'm afraid that doesn't narrow it down to much. The consecutive semitone notes are all sung in the melody of the song. At least they are the way I sing it!

Will/em; Don't worry - you didn't miss much. I'm not sure how much recording of this type I'll be doing, but thanks for the tip.

Suzi; 10/10 for the Firefly references. Loved it! I actually grew the beard in 10 minutes, but it then required 5 minutes of manscaping before filming :) Glad you enjoyed the toon.

Michele; Very glad you enjoyed it :) You sure seem to have struck a nerve with your idea of posting some easy songs. I guess it helped us to remember to enjoy playing again rather than always striving to get better. It's an important point, I think. It's not ALL about the journey - sometimes we have to stop and enjoy where we are.

Tom; Thanks a lot - glad you enjoyed it.

Vanessa; You did put a smile on my face. I'm glad the veneer held up - cos underneath I was screaming "What the &*%$ are you singing for?!?!?". I know that for a few of our members, playing the guitar is a means of being able to accompany themselves while they sing - that was never the case for me. I just wanted to play guitar. Only since joining TG have I really explored singing too and I have to admit, I'm really not very comfortable with it yet.

Bob; Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching.

Cori; Ha.......where do I start? Firstly, thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have to confess that there isn’t much of a masterplan as far as choosing songs – but I do know when it isn’t going to work. I tried a few happy songs recently and they went straight to the recycling! Secondly, yeah, I did get to Suzi’s a little before you – just sorry I couldn’t hang around and play that harp intro on Down by the Water :)

Pierre; Happy to have sent you off on one of your strange meanderings – we all enjoy that!

Traditional song: "Frankie & Johnny"
This one is old as the hills...
It really is ancient. (1912, supposedly)

Everybody and their dog has done a version of this tune. Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Hank Snow, & Sam Cook to name a few.

It's been as a blues shuffle a lot of times too. But, I like the more old-timey approach that we tried for here.

For the record, Krista pretty much hated this song. (if you watch the video closely you can tell she's getting kinda perturbed. Plus by this time, she was burping up some serious taco bell on this take. LOL!
But she was good enough to do it.
Even though I got her doing this when she probably should be studying for her radiology tests...

Anways, enough rambles

EDIT: I'd better get this in, before the Commissioner of the "Chord Police" shows up...(just kidding, Daryl lol!)

I did go over the limit...but the repetitive nature of the tune sure makes it seem like far less.
The chords used in this version of "Frankie & Johnny" are primarily: C, Cdim, Caug, F, Adim7, ....
The G chord moves from G> G7/B>Gaug but no big whoop there. Anyways that is pretty much it...except for the brief half-step slide from C#dim > Cdim

The words well...there 's so many verses & versions of his song i wouldn't know where to start.

Thanks!!

Cori

Hmmm you guys have got me thinking ... a busking thread for people wearing only their guitars ?
I think I know a few TGers who would feel right at home there :P

Dermot, I yam who I yam. In your response I think I saw a good word written in the tiny text size, so thank you.

Michele, thanks for the support ! Glad you liked it, and that the backdrop didn't give you a migraine.

Vanessa, you understood right: I was having fun but managed to be looking pretty serious ...
Recording for me is still "man versus camera", gotta get more friendly and smile at the contraption :)
And I'm glad that Michele could ask point blank "are you going to add something?".
Thanks for your appreciation !

Willem, lyrics are added now ... I take it that you had not heard of this tune before ?
And I'm sure Michele loves her guitars too much to hit people with them.

Daryl, thanks for the accounting lesson (duh...) and the encouragement !

Hydroman, the 60s reference is quite appropriate, since, as any student of history is probably aware,
that's (almost) the decade where Superman met his untimely end while rescuing Apollo 13.
Have you heard anything about what happened to Tarzan ? He seems to have dropped out of sight.

Suzi, I dug this out from long ago, had found this chord progression by ear way back then,
and yesterday did a web search and found a chord sheet with the exact same chords.
I also found other versions, for example F transposed to D#.
I haven't actually determined what key the original is in, would be a useful exercise. Thanks !

Cori, I guess that since Crash Test Dummies didn't fit into an orthodox category, it's surprising they got the airplay they did.
A lot of their material had flavors of Country music, go figure. Oh, I enjoyed your description of early nineties college life :)
Thanks mucho for watching and commenting !

Abilo, glad you stopped by. See ya.

Hey Bob ... Supe had a straight job :)

Thanks Chris, backdrop is a simple Indian print cloth hung on the wall, very low tech!

Craig, I appreciate your heads up, thanks !

Stuart, it's quite enjoyable to be able to playing standing up: I feel a bit more dynamic playing that way.
It's Dennis's open mike post, in which he plays standing, that inspired me to get used to it.
Thanks for the pat on the back :)

Pierre

I guess it will do Cori and Krista... very nicely I'd say! I liked the old-fangled way you did that on the resonator Cori and I think Krista could sing anything. Great stuff guys!

I think Krista should get to choose the next one you do, because she sang this well, even though she hates it! and should have been studying for her exam. This was great guys! Nice playing Cori. B) :)

Cheers,

Tom N.
