Today’s Update was quite different from recent, if not most ones. It was inspired by a comment from a student just this morning who had recently been taken by an old, original piece of mine, Sweet Child. This was a tune I recorded for my 1992 album Yesterday’s News. I started with a bit of Chattanooga Choo-Choo, including really small bits of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Manha De Carnaval, but most of the time was spent revisiting and analyzing Sweet Child.

This included a short talk on guitar scale lengths, due to some ridiculous stretches required in the tune, and mention of the ‘harp effect’ on guitar. The scale length thread brought out my Santa Cruz Guitar, which has a shorter one than the Claxton, and the ‘harp effect’ has quite a few examples in Sweet Child.

Unfortunately, the piece is quite rusty after many years of neglect, but I soldier through it at the end, hoping to polish it up soon.

The only other News this week is we now have a couple more openings in our April IGC due to cancellations. The Spring IGC starts April 23, 2026. Email us at [email protected] for more info.
