..From the Canadian music thread..

You can't top The Beatles' version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'- but Jeff Healey came close.

Al: Just thought about that song the other day on the way home from work. Was going to post it, but you beat me to it. He did a bang up job on this one. Nice post.

This one's for Suzi-
Here's Canadian group Bare Naked Ladies doing an excellent cover of Bruce Cockburn's 'Lovers In A Dangerous Time'.

For some reason- they're playing on a cruise ship!?

They've split up since then unfortunately..

But here's a clip of Ed Robertson just messing around with his guitar playing the same song. Anyone that's working on 'Old Man' could probably pick this one up pretty easy as well. He even threw some palm muting in there!

Wasn't he great? I can't imagine the obstacles that Jeff Healey had to overcome- but then to be able to play guitar like that on top of it all??

Gives one pause.

Always thought that song was by Dan Fogelberg, but he just covered the original, I guess.

Tell me about Jeff Healey and those obstacles Al?

Jeff was quite big in Canada- though I don't know how big a splash he made worldwide. You might know him from the Swayze movie 'Roadhouse' (another star we lost too soon). I know he was a respected guitarist/musician worldwide though, as many heavy-hitters praised him after he passed.

The main obstacle I was speaking of was being diagnosed with retinoblastoma (cancer of the eyes?) at 8 months of age. They had to surgically remove his eyes and replace them with artificial ones.

The cancer had returned to his legs and lungs last year, and he underwent aggressive radiation treatments and chemotherapy that failed to halt the spread of the disease.
While he underwent treatment, he still did frequent tours across Canada- who knows what pain he went through to do that?

You may know this song from him as well- one of his hits. 'Angel Eyes'
*Note- youtube has disabled embedding of this song for some reason. You just need to click it twice to watch it on youtube.

Thanks Al, I knew of him but didn't know any details. Impressive as you say.
Can't view that video on Youtube in my country!

Sorry, guys, but as an original East coast girl, I have to let you know that in no way are Manfred Mann's covers of Bruce's songs better. ;)

Al already mentioned one of my all time favorite covers: Johnny Cash doing "Hurt." Absolutely amazing.

But this is my other favorite, Jonathan Coulton covering Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back. He turned a completely crass, joke song into a sexy, sweet love song:
