No offense intended to the OP but my guess is "or what". There's a lot of alt/indie stuff there that doesn't do it for me. 'Course I have been accused of being a music snob and BTW, it's darned hard to type with your nose in the air. Nothing wrong with being new on the scene. Even Clapton was an unknown in the beginning.
The biggest problem with all these alt/indie groups is that they are still making music on the bleeding edge of weirdness and that makes it hard to use them for lessons. Along with that, they are not generally well known enough to be acceptable to a large audience which is what Neil needs for the site. In time, I'm sure a few of them will rise above the noise, as always, and stand out and become known. Until then.....

I was messing around on my guitar and a couple of teen/twenty somethings heard me and said how solid it was. I said thanks and silently thought they were crazy because I was not playing anything other than random scale notes on two strings. It wasn't music.
Now, I'm not saying that all the younger generation has no concept of what music is, but it did not help their case much. Most of the alt/indie stuff I've ever heard sounded like a cat being dragged through a dog kennel. On occasion I've heard some actual music and even more rare something I really like.
Branching out is not the problem. Wildly differing understandings of music is.

hmmm... It's true people have different tastes and what not, but you're just labeling any music you haven't heard of as "alt/indie," which is just wrong. Out of all the bands I listed probably only about 5 of them would even be considered indie music(also i don't think you should just classify something as "alt/indie" because those labels most of the time don't go hand in hand). A lot of the bands I listed started playing before I was even born(1989), so they can't just be music for a younger generation.
Maybe instead of just automatically assuming it's something that you wouldn't be interested in because you haven't heard it on the radio, maybe you should ask me about a band you haven't heard of or go on youtube and check out some of the songs because I guarantee everyone of those few bands I named is AMAZING.
