Overview
This lesson presents a comprehensive look at and concise explanation of the seven classic Modes, how they are related to Major and Minor Scales, how to keep them all straight, and some practical applications.
Chapter 1: Introducing Modes
Chapter 1 is a review of Major and Minor Scales and how they are actually two of the seven classic modes, the Ionian and Aeolian.
Chapter 2: The Mixolydian Mode
The first mode to learn is the Mixolydian. This chapter explains it, compares it to the Major (Ionian) Scale, and shows how to transpose it to into various keys.
Chapter 3: The Dorian Mode
The Dorian Mode is presented, compared to the Minor (Aeolian) Scale, and transposed into various keys in a similar manner.
Chapter 4: Bookends & Inside Modes
This chapter discusses the differences and similarities between the four modes considered up to this point. The Ionian and Aeolian are called the Bookend Modes, and the Mixolydian and Dorian are referred to as the Inside Modes. These are presented using the concept of Parallel Relationships, which shows the different modes all starting on the same note.
Chapter 5: The Outside Modes
The less common Modes are discussed in this chapter, the Lydian, Phrygian, and Locrian. This chapter references each Mode to the Natural Note they are derived from. The seven Modes are summarized and compared.
Chapter 6: Relative Relationships Between the Modes
In this chapter the Modes are compared using Relative Relationships, different Modes that share a common key signature. The starting point for each Mode is tied to its step number in the Major Scale. The summary includes a discussion of the difference between Parallel Relationships and Relative Relationships, as well as a short look at why the Locrian Mode is more theoretical and not really practical.
Chapter 7: Which Mode Was That?!
In this short chapter Neil plays a well-known melody in four different modes, Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, and Aeolian, then brings in a connection to the Melodic Minor Scale.
Chapter 8: Modal Chord Progressions
Neil takes a look at some chord progressions and how to determine what Mode they might be in.
Chapter 9: Modal Lead Patterns
Chapter 9 presents some ideas about figuring out Modal Patterns you can use up the neck and then transpose to other keys.
