Hi Neil,

I'm working on 'Just Breathe' and have a question about fingerpicking.

Before your lesson was released, I learned (and posted a video) of 'Just Breathe' using my index, middle AND ring finger in the picking pattern. My ring finger plays the high E string when necessary. Your lesson says not to use the ring finger, and to change from home position instead. I'm in the middle of trying to get that into muscle memory, but before I get too far- is it necessary? Or is the way you posted just staying true to the way Eddie plays it?

I know this is similar to the Blackbird question where people want to use their index finger in the picking pattern... and I understand the reason for NOT using your index in that song.

Thanks and enjoy your long weekend!

Al

Thanks for asking this Al. I had the exact same question. Beaker.

In this song it is absolutely OK to use all 3 or just 2 fingers, like Eddie does. As far as Blackbird and many other songs are concerned, sometimes my recommendations are based on expanding your tool set and other times they are designed to refine them. One of the challenges for most players with Just Breathe is the speed. There aren't many times I recommend using 2 fingers where it offers any advantage over 3.

It is all part of becoming a more versatile player.

That's great, Neil. Thanks for the quick response- even on a holiday weekend!!

Now that I've tried it both ways, I'll see which one works better for me- as both are ok technically.

Now go enjoy your weekend! B)
