Hi. My brain operates most of the time on the left side. I suppose when I play the guitar, I am mostly using the right side. I find it impossible to sing and play at the same time. Any suggestions to bring the two hemispheres together?

Nemaste I wrote you a big long response and then lost my connection before I could hit submit so I'll try again.

I think that you should look at the singing as a way to help your playing by taking the focus away from the guitar a little and helping the music to just flow a bit better. I think that initially, break the song into logical little sections and practice singing along with them until you have that section down, then go further. I think you need to associate a specific word in the lyrics with a specific chord change, that really helps to know you are right on track. Attitude is important as well. If you think you can't...you won't.

Rather obviously, you need to know the song pretty well to be able to sing with it. If you are still thinking chord changes it won't go well.

Neil has a very good video on singing in the target lessons, check that out if you haven't already and good luck with the singing.

Oh...sorry for freaking you out with my HUGE head :)

I haven't tried this personally, but I have heard the following works:

1) Make an audio recording of yourself playing the song on guitar
2) Record your singing over the guitar recording
3) Listen to yourself (repeatedly) on the tape of you playing & singing

your mind convinces itself that you can do both at once...

Jim- I think many of us find it surprisingly difficult to chew gum and walk or sing and play! lol! I think the best approach is start with a real simple 2 or 3 chord song with a steady rhythm and that you can sing to. Use a Campfire song or something really simple.

What you are trying to do is take the guitar out of the equation. If you are working, or concentrating, at playing then it's going to be really tough to sing too. But if your guitar playing is on autopilot then it's much easier to sing.

Where I get caught is a song that has a tricky picking pattern and as soon as I try to sing (such as that is) I lose the pattern and things start falling apart. But it's all because I don't have the song down well enough yet. Time for me to practice some more!

Good luck! :cheer:

play the guitar part so slowly you can sing one syllable at a time. Lather, rinse, repeat. This approach works with any song.

I guarantee if you practice this part as often as you practiced the song on the guitar, you'll have no problem.

This approach works for me, YMMV.
