Neil,

I'm working on the Fingerpicking 101 lesson, and you give an exercise in the .pdf. The arpeggio is written for us to play one measure of each chord, but since I'm new to this, does it harm what you're attempting to teach to play 2 or 4 measures of, say the first measure, "C" chord? The problem I'm getting is that it seems to change too rapidly, and after doing this for 2 hours, I'm still unable to remember the melody without consulting the .pdf.

Pardon me if this is a silly question, as it seems I should do whatever is helpful for me without permission, but I often do such things at my own peril.

Thanks for your time in reading this.

Terry

Terry, are you playing these exercises with a metronome? Hopefully Neil will address this in his Friday news release.

Hi Terry, great your on the fingerpickin lessons and those exercises are great to start with,,although I never bin there,,saw them ones,,

I start pickin by learning songs such as ''the house of the rising sun''& ''hallelujah'' and pickin out the strings/notes for these songs looks like the first exercise in the 101 lesson,,just with some other chords..

When you you look in the 101 lessons at page 2/3 pattern 1 you can use the same pickin on ''landslide''(also with other chords of course) which is a nice song to go at..

I just wanted to call out a few songs were you can work on also (maybe)..

''Black bird'' is also a great one thought by Neil for getting your thumb going,,many of us has taken this song..

to give myself some criticism I can say I'm on my way in the fingerpickin world but the hardest thing is letting the strings ring(sustain) which have all to do with place and relaese the strings in order you need them...its the hardest thing!!!

goodluck on the fingerpickin yourney.

Willem

ps just wanted to say something but you asked Neil is'nt it ..

edit: you get also a lot out uploading a video with faults etc..well faults!! you get me I think..

Scott: No, I haven't used the metronome yet.

Willem: Thanks for the comments, but my fingerpiciking ability is gross to the level that I am rarely able to pick out the base notes by ear; I almost always have to depend on tab. I've tried to learn fingerpicking by ear, but I haven't been able to do it yet. I do play a pretty good version of House Of The Rising Sun, but it's all flatpicking.
