The relative minor key of any major key is the sixth degree of the major key. So, in the key of C, C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6 and B=7 hence Am is the relative minor key of the key of C and all of the notes are the same.
So does this explain why the C major pentatonic scale is the same as the Am pentatonic? Or Em and G?

Yes, Rick, that is exactly right.

In fact, and I hope this doesn't confuse things, pattern number 1 for the major pentatonic scale is pattern number 5 for the minor pentatonic scale. This makes perfect sense if you look at it on the fretboard, i.e. on the 6th string C is at the 8th fret so that is where the C major pentatonic pattern #1 starts. To get from C to A count back 3 half steps to the 5th fret on the 6th string. If you play the major pentatonic pattern #5 there it is the same as the Am pentatonic pattern #1.

I hope I didn't muddy the waters, but it important to see how everything relates.

I am trying to get the scales under my thick skull. I decided that I should learn mechanically the major, minor and the Blues scale. Once I would know them very well I would address the theory which should then be easier to understand. I understand that the same scale will be the same along the fretboard depending on the root note where you start. However when I tried to find a standard format to work on (I know the minor pentatonic scale), nobody seems to agree as what is for example A major. They look similar but there are all kinds of variations. I bougth 2 books and with what I find on the internet, I cannot find a common way of doing it so I do not know where to start.

So I am basically looking for a reliable reference of tabs showing what I should learn and practice.

Thanks for any suggestions

Marc

Still too big, here it is compressed.

Ric

P.S. - you guys really need to work on the file upload feature, as it stands it is pretty restrictive. Thanks.
