Neil doesn't squeak (much)
Yea the first time I did it was an accident. I thought my hands where clean and good to go and then they started silently sliding all over and I was able to get to frets quicker. And I was like oh...why...then I figured it out. As for deading the strings, I go for a pretty laid back sound anyway. On my classical I play light polish studio strings that are designed supposedly not to squeak as much.
On my steel sting I have went with extra light tension strings to kill what sounded to me like an overly bright guitar. Still adjusting to make that come into line with the way I want that to play.
