Evidently some of you guys need to be a bit more discerning about the people you play with. Martin, in most bands I've been in, if it weren't for the bass, the guitars and the drums would be playing different songs. It's always been my job to keep the primates and the prima donnas on the same page. To quote Jim Dandy Mangrum "I believe you have to have broad shoulders to play the bass." I don't do much slapping of the bass. My technique calls for a bit more finesse. My idols are people like Chris Squire, The Ox, Dennis Dunaway, Felix Pappalardi, Sir Paul, Roger Glover, and Geddy. Not a slacker amongst the group. BTW, if any of you guys need help with rhythm issues feel free to ask me.
In closing, Bear, I saw your bass player jokes the first day I joined the board and I'll just leave you with one question: What is the range of a fretless bass? The answer is about 20 yards with a good arm.
I see how you guys are. Since I can only quote one of you at a time, I'll start here and work my way back up. Never mind the fact that I was a guitar player for about 6 years before I started playing bass or that I have been composing and performing my own material for over 30 years on guitar. Don't consider that we have more guitars in the house than basses. I started playing bass because my brother was trying to put a band together. I gave him his first guitar and wanted to encourage him and somebody offered me a deal on a Gibson Ripper.I think you are right, Martin. Now we need for Chris to confirm this and prove what we have always suspected. :S

Great comeback Chris!!!!
Actually, I have had pretty good experiences with bass players. With the possible exception of one, no matter what we played he was always about 20 bpm slow. We were finally able to correct the problem...we shot him.

Hey TG-ers.
Al here. Canadian boy- as you can tell by my avatar! Turning the big 'Four-Oh' this year (September 19th actually). I'm looking forward to the surprise party you're going to throw me on the Forums
I'm a freelance Cameraman/Editor and live just east of Toronto. Work is REALLY slow this year due to the recession. The upside is I've got LOTS of time to practice guitar and hang on the forums.
I used to play guitar in my teens- but only learned a few chords. Fast forward to 2008-- my daughter (9 yrs old) started taking piano lessons. I took about 6 months of guitar lessons at the same time. Was very expensive ($22/week!!) Luckily I found TG and left the live lessons.
I guess I'm an intermediate player- as I can play barre chords (Neil's definition?)
But I'm definitely a beginner when it comes to theory. Am definitely looking forward to Neil's upcoming continuing 'beginner lessons'. I need a practice regimen with scales/excercises etc.
I know I'll never be a guitar god- but would like to be able to play smoothly and cleanly without fear of bad notes/chords.

What's really interesting is why does everyone immediately "get" bass player jokes? They just nod their heads with this look of complete understanding!!
