Hi Neil

I have been studying a lot of fingerpicking lessons lately and i have seen you doing some rolling stuff that we make a really nice effect instead of picking all chords together (example hallelujah). Only problem: it sounds really bad when i trying to do it
Could you please tell us how to practice this rolling? I bet many students are having the same problem!

Thanks et a bientot

Vincent

Check out the "Solo- Break it Down" segment of "Imagine". Neil covers this about 1/2 way through. I think he also talks about it in "Yesterday" somewhere.

Might be nice to have a quick tip on this somewhere though..

No probs Vince.
I've been practicing rolls, and it ain't easy. I find myself wanting to roll the other way (pinky to thumb)- but that's not the way Neil does it and his way sounds better.

sure acoustica but it is really hard and that s how you can tell that Neil is really skilled...
Anyway i will keep practising and maybe someday he will do a quick tip video on how to improve it

A quick tip that I give students when they are working on this is to not think of it as 4 individual motions (p-i-m-a) done quickly, but as 1 motion where each finger is progressively delayed.

You can also practice it just 2 fingers at a time, just slightly separating them, almost to the point where you are not sure if they were together or a little apart. Start with p-i, then i-m, then i-m-a, then try all 4.

Let me know if this helps.

Neil

I is index, or first finger
M is middle, or second finger
A is ring, or third finger
