Suzi, did you listen to the actual Neil Young version, you must have, because to me his singing and the melody is what makes this such a ?? just pleasant song. It is one of my fav. NY songs, especially with him singing it. Thanks for the Karma, I think the Needle has to be harder the Harvest Moon, just a few chords & strumming, well It's harder for me, guess we all have our things we are better at than others. I guess that's one thing that makes TG so cool, everybody is just trying their best and we have all different levels although it seems there is not a lot of difference in ability, some for sure but not a lot. GaryGary, Haha, I'm not going to subject anyone here to me singing on camera. I like my fellow TGers way to much to do that! I'll leave the singing to Chris (Neverfoundthetime) who can actually carry a tune.
And you're crazy for thinking that you "have a way to go to catch up with" me! Harvest Moon looks harder than Needle. I took a look at it today, and I really do not think I'm ready for it. But I AM going to tackle at some point in the next year. I think it's my new favorite song. I can't believe more people don't use this as a wedding song- it's got to be one of the most romantic songs ever written.
Oh, and I did finally give you your karma last night.

Gary,
Al posted a link on my wall to a video of NY singing this song. It was the first time I heard the real version (your version was my first experience at all with the song!) and it was "love-at-first-listen." His vocals in it, combined with the accompanying guitar, are just spectacular. It's been in my head all morning.
You know, I'm curious to look at the lesson on Harvest Moon, because Neil has it marked as a "5" and Needle as a "4", regarding difficulty. But I've played some other 4-level songs (I Will Follow You into the Dark, Two of Us, and Wish You Were Here) and they don't seem nearly as tricky as Needle. Now, obviously you'll never get everyone to agree on how "difficult" a song is, so no criticism of Neil is intended, but I'm wondering if maybe he underestimated how hard Needle is, or overestimated some of those other songs. Anyway, in short, maybe I'll have a go at Harvest Moon sooner than I thought. Maybe it's something I could handle, with lots of work anyway, already.

This is something an old guitar teacher of mine used to do and i posted this idea way back, I tried it and it does work, I used a vertical drill and just put a 1/4 bit through the centre of the pick. Give it a go, it works! Watch your fingers with the drill though!jayswett wrote:Punching holes in your pick, tell me more, sounds like a way of getting a grip on the pick so it doesn't slip out of your grip. GaryI followed the advice of the Rock'nRoll Preacher Man and used a hole punch to make a couple of holes in my picks. It doesn't completely fix the problem of the mobile pick, but it does help alot. I fing it difficult with to play (reliably) individual notes with the pick, but like anything with the guitar, it's just a matter of putting in the time to develop the muscle memory.
Chas, I have a pick that has a single hole about 1/4" and it helps with gripping so it doesn't slip. It is a problem since I'm sometimes trying to strum softer which means holding the pick w/ less force. I was thinking about getting a lighter pick and drilling maybe 6 small holes hopefully leaving a rough edge where the drill exits. Seems like that might give some more grip w/ no cost. Let you know how it works out, I have some picks with cork on the gripping part, that works pretty well but I was thinking about trying some sandpaper w/ adhesive back. It is generally used on ramps to avoid slipping in the rain or light snow etc. Gary

Jay, I just took one of my "Star"picks and drilled a couple of smaller holes on each side of the Star in the upper middle of the pick, I also put some sandpaper w/adhesive back (it is used for gripping on ramps during rain or light snow). I cut a piece out and peeled the back off and it stuck to the pick great, now I have a pick with a star cutout where your thumb would hold the pick a couple smaller holes on each side and sandpaper glued to one side of the pick. Feels like I should avoid that slipping pick problem I and others have. Gary.I followed the advice of the Rock'nRoll Preacher Man and used a hole punch to make a couple of holes in my picks. Gary, Did you edit your title or did I somehow miss getting name-checked before? Also, I scanned through past comments, but I didn't see you mention what your guitar is. It's beautiful. I love the cutaway feature- something I would really like in the future but felt like I couldn't afford right now. Not that I'm complaining- I love my guitar!
I'm going to take a look at Harvest Moon starting tomorrow. I'm ready to tackle something harder, even if it takes me two years to learn (which hopefully it won't!). And I do love this song.
