A long distance collaboration
Ok for those involved or interested I feel the need to provide another update.
Obviously this is a time of the year when people are really busy and not necessarily focused just on guitar. I have always said there is no real deadline on this but of course I am keen for everyone to know that one way or another it will go ahead. I think it's good to finish what you start.
OK so the current situation is that I'm waiting to hear from Wandoctor. As I said he may well be on vacation or busy with family etc. Wandoctor had volunteered to put up a reference track and also mix all the inputs so he is pretty important to the project.
Reiver has graciously offered to post a reference also, however as Wandoctor is doing the mixing which is a big job I would really like him to be involved in the playing as well. Plus Reiver is doing the harmonica with Willem so I don't want too much falling on one person.
So keep practicing guys. I want to give Wandoctor some time. If for whatever reason I don't hear from him in the next couple of weeks I will work with Reiver to formulate another cunning plan.

Has anyone clocked the original recording of this song?
I agree with Suzi that 80-anything is way too slow. It sounds best to me at about 140. I tried clocking the original recording, and either I did it poorly or Neil Young's tempo wandered quite a bit.

Obviously you're right, the actual bpm is about 170 (not 140) but when I have a metronome playing at that speed all i can hear are clicks, not the guitar, so I play the metronome at half speed which gives the 1st and 3rd beats of each bar - which fits with this song quite nicely.
Sorry for not being clear

Thanks reiver. That sounds about right. I got about 166 from the recording, but it didn't sound consistent to me, maybe like it slowed down in spots.
I'll start working on this in high gear today in anticipation of wandoctor's reference track.

Damn, I just posted this entire thing and it disappeared when I hit submit.
Right, here it is.
Some things to take note of:
None of this recording will be in the final video. Feel free to record any section you want, the whole thing, solos, etc. I'll make it work no matter how many I get, I will get them all in.
The sections are a little different than Neil's PDF for his lesson. I played it as the NY recording goes.
Intro:
Harmonica:
Verse:
Harmonica, last section only 1x through
Verse
Harmonica, first section only
Outro:
This should be about 160 bpm, but I wasn't using a metronome...shame on me.
