Hi Everyone,
Hope someone out there can help me. I've been practicing Norweigan Wood by playing along with the great Neil Hogan, but I would like to play at the same speed without Neil to see how bad I sound. My problem is setting the metronome to 48 dotted quarter notes. The song is in 12/8 time and I do have the ability to change the # of beats on my cheapo Korg metronome. Any help will be greatly appreciated on how to set my metronome. Thanks.
Setting metronome to dotted quarter notes
Hi, not sure if I can help here, 'cos I don't know what 48 dotted quarter notes means, but I just set a basic online metronome to a 3 beat cycle at 178 bpm and that seemed to be about right for Neil's play along. Don't know how that converts to a Korg MA-30 though.

When using a metronome, it doesn't matter what type of note is written in the music. Having all whole notes vs dotted quarter notes doesn't change the bpm/tempo. The dotted quarter just tells you how long to hold the note for.
That being said, Norwegian Wood is 12/8 time, which means you have 12 beeps of the metronome per measure. After clocking the real song I imagine your metronome should be set to a tempo around 178-180, like Reiver mentioned.
So the first measure gives you 12 beeps to cover the "I once had a girl, or should I" part. Set the tempo at 178 and have at it.
I'm not sure if that helped, but I hope it did. Dare we hope you'll post a vid? I look forward to seeing it!

Thank you Wiley and everyone else. Set my metronome to 144 bpm @ 3 beats and it is spot on. Thank you. I'm sure there is some theory to be learned from this, but that is for another day.
The TAP function on a metronome is soooo helpful.
I turn on my metronome and get it into tap mode then start Neil's playback lesson and tap my metronomes button with his metronome. Mine gives me the speed his is running at based on the taps. Instant feedback got me 144 on his 80% playback video.

I must have missed the bit in the thread that said we were trying to set the bpm for the slow play through. In fact I've re-read the thread and I still cant find it. Also, on subsequent listening to the slow play through, he does actually say what bpm he's playing at.
