Never heard the song, but from the title I'm guessing it would have to be the great Billie Holiday.

Bob Dylan's 1969 hit "Lay Lady Lay" from his album 'Nashville Skyline' was originally planned to be the theme song of the soundtrack to the movie, "Midnight Cowboy". The song was not submitted in time to be included in the movie's soundtrack. The producers of the movie changed the theme song to Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'".

Who was the 'guest' bass player on the recording of "Lay Lady Lay"?

Bill

DIng! Ding! Ding! A cigar for the man in the front row from Kiwiland.

Charlie Daniels played guitar, bass, and his fiddle on several recordings, mostly Country songs. Image

That's right!

Bessie Smith, the greatest of all blues singers, is known as the "Empress of the Blues". A protégé of an earlier blues singer named Ma Rainey, Bessie recorded during the 1920s. Her flair and dramatic style would set the stage for many artists to come, including other transitional favorites from the 1950's, such as Etta James and Dinah Washington. Bessie Smith died at the young age of forty-three in a tragic automobile accident.
