Still bending rather than doing a pull-off - any advice?

I've been learning 'Here Comes the Sun', which is going well and I'm almost ready to post (I think). But, I'm having trouble cleaning up a pull-off at the end of the 15th bar (just before the repeat sign). I'm bending it before I manage to do the pull-off and it isn't coming out cleanly. I'm using the fingering that Neil suggests, using my first finger for the C# that follows the D. I have even changed my strings (from custom light to light). This has improved things, but I'm still not getting a clean sound. I've also tried doing the pull-off more quickly (which I'm trying to maintain as again it is better).

The problem is that even when using all of the above solutions, I'm still bending the string (and the note) before I manage to make the C# ring. Have any of you experienced this? How did you resolve it?

Thanks

Michele

Michelle,
I've fought this problem and still do on some notes. The only way to overcome it is practice. If your technique is clean, then practice is your only option. Like everything else, you're just going to have to beat it to death.

Repeat it to death. Yeh... I was afraid of that. THanks Andy.

Increase the speed of the finger motion to execute the pull-off. Think of it as a twitch-off instead of a pull-off.

Michele- Dan is correct as usual! It's a speed thing. A good pull off is almost a brush stroke. Don't firmly plant your finger on the string or it will be too hard to disengage it quickly. If you have heavy calluses it will be even harder.

I'm working on a song right now that has dozens of pull offs and I had to really change my technique. Also, make sure you are pulling straight down so your fingertip releases very quickly.

Pull offs are much easier for electric guitarists because the strings are smoother and the electronics make the sounds. But the principles are the same and electric guitarists have learned that a very light touch is all that is needed.

And, of course, you will have to practice it a million times! lol!

Cheers! :cheer:

If you anlayse a pull off it looks like a very slight bend, but is in fact a pluck downwards so instead of bending flat against the neck you pull down as in a bend but lift the finger quickly almost simultaneously. Alas no silver bullet here its practice, practice, practice. Its like two movements of the plucking finger, down and off, within the single beat.

Bloody geniuses! or is that genii? It is coming together, twitch, back and lighter touch. I would never have though of taking the pressure off a bit. Thank you. I'm still getting it right, but I feel like I'm on the right track now and it is just a matter of finding the right combo of movements. Woo hoo! You guys rock.
