Hi y'all. It's grey and raining outside, but if feels like the sun is shining again.
I never really know where to put these technical questions. Here is another 'do you experience this too?' question.
OK. I'm learning "While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and this is the first time I've attempted palm muting. I'm getting the hang of it, slowly. But, I seem to be grating the front of my first finger (of my strumming hand) on the strings too. I assume I've got my attack angle a bit wrong and am trying to adjust it.
So, is this par for the course for palm muting? Or am I just not doing it right? (I assume it's the latter).
Hopefully, I'm not the only one that does this.
Oh well.
Just wondering.
Michele
It's called 'palm muting', so why am I grating my knuckle off?
Michele- if you are grating your finger your angle is indeed incorrect. There really isn't a whole lot of movement to this technique.
It's simply laying the heel of your palm against the bridge on the downstroke with varying derees of pressure depending on how many strings you want to mute. The more pressure, the more muting.
But it does require A LOT of practice to control it propertly. And it is really part of a broader study of percussive strumming. But it is a mandatory technique to learn like hammer-ons, vibrato and all the rest of the things in our tool bag.
You'll get it, just keep working on it. I really improved my muting by learning Old Man and watching Neil's demostration. If you are doing it right you can really atack the strings with a hard downstroke. It's fun to play that hard and have the notes so muffled.
Don't forget, there is left hand muting too!
Good luck! :cheer:

Thanks for the responses guys.
Rick, great advice. I just watched Old Man. I'm tempted to learn it too now, but I think I'll stick to the songs I have on right now. I think I understand what I'm suppose to be doing a little better.
Marc and Willem - I think I'll take Neil and Ricks advice and just keep practicing this for a while, especially as I now have confirmation that my angle is wrong. If I'm still struggling in a week or so I will think seriously about recording it.
Willem - yes I know Muckypig very well. She lives in my suburb.... Take a closer look - think 1985... recognise her? (Remember Facebook)
