Hi Windy, welcome to TG from Montreal Canada,

You migth wanty to rest your palm on the bridge fro palm muting while strumming or picking. This way you will cover both thick and thin strings and you can control the intensity. The further from the bridge that you rest your palm the muter the strings. If you want to have some percussive effect, you then hit the strings with your palm at the same time you strum (easier said then done). You should not have to worry to palm muting the thin and the thick strings at the same time as you normally strum one or the other (if you hit a D you should only hit 4 strings, with the C only 5 strings (well mostly the 4 middle strings)) . There is the G which covers 6 strings but if you are palm muting you would want the effect to be on the thick strings.

Hi Windy,

There are a few videos that show good palm muting technique in Target. One is Wild World (Cat Stevens) another is I'm Yours (Jason Mraz). Also there is a really good preview of Love Her Madly (The Doors) that may be particularly useful for muting high strings as you mentioned. Can I suggest checking out those 3 for starters.

I suspect it's a case of practice and more practice.

Good luck, hope that's some small help to you.

By the way...surely it get's real cold sitting on the snow in shorts??

Nothing for me to add, Windy. Marc and Tony covered it pretty well, now its just practice, practice, and more practice. You'll get it.

By the way, welcome to TG.

Really? Looks like snow! Sand would make more sense. That sure is some WHITE sand.

Yeh - I'm guessing sand too.

Old Man - by Neil Young is another lesson where Neil demonstrates palm muting. I'm been practicing it for a little while and need a lot more.

Good luck.
