Brad and Michele,
Loved both of those vids, and thanks to Ness for clearing up a couple of things for me as well. I have a similar goal for this year as Michele, which is to become a better strummer and flatpicker. I haven't done my share to contribute to the Busking threads, but I will shortly. Nice job with this Neil Young thread.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice, Stuart, WRENCH, marc, willem and you if i forgot you :) I now have a picture of what it is meant to be.

Vanessa- Neil is officially sacked :P (oz humor, i didnt mean that neil) but thanks so much for such a clear explanation, B) and i can rewind instantly and not have to wait for streaming to make up its mind if it is going to work.

Michelle- that was great, do you find it easy singing that way rather than playing?? I find you get the feel for the song while you play and sing where is i couldnt do it just listening to the track as you dont feel apart of the song. I was just wondering if that feels more comfortable for you?

Neil said your not allowed to put yourself down remember! what you just did (video/singing) is unique and its your your little creation the people who would mock us are the ones who would never attempt it in the first place and not everyone can do what you just did. I am finding the more we do this the better it gets which is the whole aim.

so great job!

Brad - Thanks. I can't wait to see how you go once you've had a chance to incorporate Ness' lesson. You're so close already it's just the timing of the riff and the walking bass that is left to conquer.

Re: deprecating humor - well where would an Aussie be if we didn't have a go at ourselves (a lot)? Besides, the singing really is pretty crappy. I had a listen this afternoon and was cringing big time. Still it's a start. And to answer your question, yes I do find I get into the feel of the song more if I'm playing it at the same time. But, for some reason I kept stuffing up the words. Too many things to think about I suppose. I also rushed the singing bits trying to get the project finished. Oh well, I'm still hoping that at some point if I just keep doing it something will click and I'll get big improvement. Nerves are a HUGE part of it and I found with playing that just doing it helped to reduce the nerves overtime. So I'm going with 'fake it 'til I make it'. Besides, if people are going to be so sweet and fib (telling me I sounds good) then they deserve hearing me some more. :P

You are generally a lot more relaxed when you sing. What's your secret?

Are you feeling any improvement in the riff yet?

Thanks for the pep talk and you're absolutely right and ditto to you.

Jay - Thanks. I've been wondering when you might pop into one of the busking threads. I'm looking forward to that.

Willem - Thanks you really are very sweet. I do believe enough, which is why I posted, but I've got a lot to learn if I'm ever going to sound like any of the awesome singers we've got in the community. Re: the harmonica part, I just played the recording over and over until I had the harmonica part burned into my head and then I found it on the guitar. Once I had something close I just checked it against the album. It was a lot of fun. Neil actually suggested that you could just ad lib the harmonic part instead; a play what you feel approach. But, if I do write it down I'll send it your way.

Michele

thanks. Oh and if I'd known I was going to earn kisses for my efforts I might just have gotten my act together earlier.
... so what's Willem going to give you if you do an even better performance?!! The mind boggles! :side:

Has anybody ever requested that you do a Joan Baez tune?

Pierrel.. . Yep ...I think it was you ... Her voice is actually a lot higher than mine when I'm singing in a comfortable range.
OK, so fiddle with the capo and put me out of my misery ... you could SO do a rendition of a Baez tune !

(I'm holding my breath ... so there ! )

I'm loving these busking threads, but I wish there was an easier way to know when a new video went up in them!!! I just realized that I missed Shel's, Brad's AND Stuart's! GRRR!!

So:

Stuart: I'd never heard this NY song before, but I loved your version of it. You have such a nice, soulful voice (though it is more Cat Stevens than Neil Young), a real pleasure to listen to.

Brad: Nice job with your strumming- and I'm sure with the great advice you got regarding that riff (especially from Ness)- you'll have it down in no time. And I wanted to tell you that your recent video inspired me to learn You've Got to Hide Your Love Away. That's a song that looks a lot easier to play than it is! That transition from the Dsus4 to the Fadd9 (I think that's what it is!) is a real doozy.

Shel: Look at you, going all high-tech!!! I'm impressed! I LOVED the little guitar solo you added and now I'm going to learn it (especially as my foray into the harmonica world didn't go too far :S ). Plus, I've recently started working on picking out melodies, and it'll be a good bit of practice for me. Having never (I think?) seen you strum a song, I was really impressed with your technique in this song. Really light touch, nice hits on the bass notes- I'll be watching it again for inspiration for my own strumming.

I didn't want to leave Vanessa out!

Nesh: Your explanatory video to Brad was really great. Very clear and helpful. And I can't imagine that Neil would mind at all that you did that. I think he probably really supports us all trying to help each other out with songs we're working on, whether through written advice or through video advice (which, sometimes, is really the best because it's often easier to learn something on guitar if you SEE it instead of reading about it). And I might just go ahead and play the riffs with your video to make sure that I'M getting the timing down!
