Another simply awesome performance. This is one of my favorite Neil Young songs, and you captured the vibe of the song perfectly while at the same time making it your own.
It was a cold evening in Wisconsin on February 16th, 2011, but we were in my friend's warm upstairs studio making music. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and whenever we call it quits for the evening, I must check my gear bag and guitar cases to make sure that the house cat hasn't fallen asleep in one or the other and I don't inadvertently pack her up and take her home with me. Frequently, I am treated to some of the best food on this green (or in this case, white, snow covered) earth before our jam session begins. You get the picture. This is my idea of what playing music is all about.
So, a little about this particular upload. It is Neil Young's Out on the Weekend from his Harvest album. I was probably 14 or 15 years old when it was released and had the grooves worn out on it (vinyl records then) a week or so after I bought it. With that big clue, you can probably do the math and figure out my age. This may be one of the first songs that I learned to play when I was a teenager. I think I have seen Mr. Young in concert about three times since then and am always spellbound during his acoustic sets.
Prior to the recording of this video, my friend and I had attempted this song once or twice. He had just bought a set of harmonicas and started practicing on a Dylan tune that we were working on. When I heard him playing Dylan the first time, I knew he would easily fall into this one and suggested trying it out. What can I say, the guy is a natural. He always makes me feel like I can play above my ability.
So, this was the second take on this song for the evening and the third or fourth time that we had tried playing it together. Our regimen has been to talk about a song one of us would like to play. If the other person likes it, we'll run through it on our own before we get together on it for a jam session (our jamming time together is valuable, so we don't want to waste it waiting for the other to learn their part). Then we'll run through it quickly once or twice, and decide if we want to keep it or drop it. If we keep it, we'll practice it individually again until we feel we are comfortable enough with it to try again at another session. This was the point that the song was at when I shot this video. You can tell that we haven't completely found our groove on it and, to this day, are still experimenting with the dynamics.
I guess you could say that this is our down and dirty busking version. My guitar case is open, but don't throw any coins into it . . . . you may wake the cat.
One added note. My friend in the video has graciously agreed to be my guest at the March 26th TG jam session in Green Lake, WI. There is another thread on that here on the forum. We’ll probably run through this song then and hope to have others join in with us and show us how it’s really done.

PLEASE NOTE: If video was recently uploaded it will not work yet. YouTube will need a little more time to get the video ready. Please check back again soon.
Hey Hydro, sounded cool to me mate. I'm doing the same myself later today, playing with friends is something I so look forward to. Thanks for sharing this and for giving such a good background to the evening.
Hydroman, that DID sound great. It has a good groove to it, maybe it is good that you have not done it too many times. I like it. I like that little hammer on that you do on the E, and the bass sounds good, steady. You guys' have a good even tempo. That harmonica was very cool too. My friends and I do this one as well, but I think I want to take a page from your book next time. Maybe it will help if I wear a kick ass truckers hat! That'l get a Neil Young feel!
I am digging deep into my memory now, but was it you who jammed w BigBear in the park in Oregon a while ago? I think it was but I am not 100% sure.
Great work guys, very harmonic. I am always amazed that someone can play guitar (bass in this case) play harmonica and tap his foot keeping everything in time. Great singing Hydroman and nice music room you have
What a great time. I enjoyed that, thanks for sharing and giving the background for the evening. Good food, good friends, making music...I have to agree with you, this is what playing music is all about.
