Hi everyone,

Well I though it was about time I added something else to this thread. This is not perfect, but the best I can do in front of the camera right now.

This song was one of the suggestions I got (from Ness) when I put up the original questions about simple songs that you all love to play and sing. I recently was inspired again to learn it. Yes, while Tony (who has also posted this song) is off studying hard and practicing like a madman to reach his blues goals, I’m back to just playing and singing for a while.

Daryl - I’m calling this 5 chords. I’m ignoring the slash chords as they really just move the bass around.

It’s a cool song and doesn’t take much to learn. It’s all played with the thumb and the first two fingers and just requires a steady rhythm. Neil has a free lesson on the verses here in the key of D, which is cool.

The version I’m playing is in C, which is a little easier again.

Ahhh... and I seem to be channeling my inner Santa at the end. :)

Enjoy

Shel

PLEASE NOTE: If video was recently uploaded it will not work yet. YouTube will need a little more time to get the video ready. Please check back again soon.

Sorry - the placement of the chords against the words has all changed - but, listen to the song and you'll hear where to change.

Hey There Delilah - Plain White Ts - in C

Intro

C, Em, C, Em

VERSE 1
C Em
Hey there Delilah, What’s it like in New York City?
C Em
I’m a thousand miles away, But girl tonight you look so pretty,
Am Am/G F G Am
Yes you do, Time Square can’t shine as bright as you,
G G5
I swear it’s true.

VERSE 2
C Em
Hey there Delilah, Don’t you worry about the distance,
C Em
I’m right there if you get lonely, Give this song another listen,
Am Am/G F G Am
Close your eyes, Listen to my voice it’s my disguise,
G G5
I’m by your side.

CHORUS
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G
What you do to me.

VERSE 3
C Em
Hey there Delilah, I know times are getting hard,
C Em
But just believe me girl some day, I'll pay the bills with this guitar,
Am Am/G F G Am
We'll have it good, We'll have the life we knew we would,
G G5
My word is good.

VERSE 4
C Em
Hey there Delilah, I’ve got so much left to say,
C Em
If every simple song I wrote to you, Would take your breath away,
Am Am/G F G Am
I’d write it all, Even more in love with me you’d fall,
G
We’d have it all.

CHORUS
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am Am/G
Oh it’s what you do to me,

Bridge
F G
A thousand miles seems pretty far, But they’ve got planes and trains and cars,
C C/G Am Am/G
I’d walk to you if I had no other way
F G
Our friends would all make fun of us, And we'll just laugh along because,
C C/G Am Am/G
We know that none of them have felt this way,
F G
Delilah I can promise you, That by the time that we get through,
Am G G5
The world will never ever be the same, And you’re to blame.

VERSE 5
C Em
Hey there Delilah you be good, And don’t you miss me,
C Em
Two more years and you’ll be done with school, And I'll be making history,
Am Am/G F G Am Am/G
Like I do, You’ll know it's all because of you,
F G Am Am/G
We can do whatever we want to,
F G Am G G5
Hey there Delilah here's to you, This one’s for you.

FINAL CHORUS

C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B
Oh it’s what you do to me,
C C/G Am C/B (continue until end of ohhhs)
Ohhh (end on a full C) (ahhhh... not ho, ho, ho, ho, ho unless it’s almost Christmas perhaps).

Very nice Michele. This would be a perfect song to add some bass guitar to. The notes are all right there for you. And it would be good practice for you (for the bass playing as well as the syncing of the audio and video pieces). Good addition to this thread!

For those who care or are interested I created an "index of songs" in the initial post of this thread as this thread is now 40 pages long and no one is going to wade though all 40 pages to look for a particular song....and besides I had some spare time this morning and I felt like going through all the videos again.

FYI as of Michele's "Hey There Delilah" post there has been 53 songs performed. I hope there will be more coming!

Daryl, I'm a little late to your video but wanted to say that it is GREAT like all of your posts. I love to watch your strumming and picking, it's a good tutorial for me... plus that's a great song to add to the thread! Whenever you post a video I always feel like I should say, Thank You!

Michelle, That was WONDERFUL! I thought you sang it very well, and that's a lot of words!!! Your playing was very solid. A great post all the way around. Thanks for sharing with us! I will come back later today and play along with you!!

Great posts by both of you!

Craig

Michele,

Very nice playing and singing. You seemed very comfortable and relaxed. I was wondering what Santa had to do with this

Thanks for sharing

Oh my gosh Shel, I absolutely LOVED it!!! :woohoo: Soooooooo very well done woman, am proud of you!!! And yeah, I cracked up BIG time at the end, never imagined you'd had some santa inside you, hahahaha!

But seriously, I thought you sung this really well, I very well know that you really need to pay attention to whén to breath in, otherwise you're screwed :S :P!

Big compliment for the right hand, very consistent timingwise and solid pickingwise and vice versa! Haha! Nice left hand-thumbwork too, but I'm sure after doing so on your classical, you can do it on any guitar ;) . Great to see the Larrivée back into your hands, must have been nice to play it again. :)

Also, you're getting so much more relaxed in front of the camera, I can see the fun in your eyes and the tiny smiles, well obviously the big smiles are just fantastic to see, absolutely loved to see those! :) :) :)

Anyway, again, I just LOVED it!!!!!!!

Ness

Daryl: Thanks so much Daryl, how great to be able to check that list, thanks for using your free time to figure it all out, some work! :cheer:

Shel,

This was so great to see from you!! I remember when Tony posted this song a while back. I hadn't heard it before and I really loved how simple and sweet it sounds. I loved the way you played this and thought your vocals sounded just right. Of course I loved all those cute smiles throughout and especially loved your Ho Ho bit at the end. Leave it to you to throw in some humor whenever you can :) It's one thing I sure do love about your personality!

Loved it ... loved it ... loved it. That was damned near perfect, Shel -- in fact, one of my favorite uploads of yours, and you've put up a lot of excellent ones. Your finger picking, as always, is just beautiful to watch and your singing, despite what you may think, sounded confident and very self-assured. I even love how your Aussie accent makes the girl's name come out as Delilahr.
