I have to admit that it's been a looooong time since I watched this lesson. I suggest you do what he's suggesting. He's doing it for a reason.
I only suggested that the pivot seemed Ok to me because my finger is still in contact with the string when I do that, so since I need it for the next chord I leave it there.
But, if it's been recommended to you to do it differently, which it has, for a range of other reasons, then keep trying it the way that's been suggested.
I do think you're over thinking it. Just put the chord shape down and if you need to, change the order that you form the chord so that you can pluck each note. If you don't need the fingers on the strings that are not being plucked for another note, the just put them down in the chord shape anyway. That way you don't need to remember a different shape, just the chord and the order you need to put the first fingers down.
Watch the lesson. Maybe Neil will answer you question in the news.

Dermot,
Why don't you upload a video of this for review? You could do a normal version and a finger independence practice version. That way those in the know can give you advice based on what you are actually doing, rather than just a description of what you think you're doing. You probably aren't seeing the things you could do to stop the stumbles (besides slowing it down).
A picture paints a thousand words. So a video's got to be even more verbose.
right?
Just record something. It's a great teaching and learning tool.

Well Dermot. It looks like we both need to re-examine our small barres and how to shift properly to the Am shape.
I guess you don't know you're doing it wrong sometimes until its pointed out to you.
I've definitely got more to learn.
