Your description of your guitar playing sounds like mine. I would also describe myself as a fingerpicker, but with the lessons here, I've also started to strum a bit.
As others have said, this is a great place to improve your playing. Neil has an excellent way of taking a song apart and really explaining what is going on. I have learned and improved quite a bit already. Plus, I love all the history of the songs he imparts along with the lessons.
As for recording your playing, I highly recommend it. It will help you hear yourself, and many of us use a webcam and that seems to be good enough.
