Hi Folks,
Having been a member of the site for a while, but not a participant in the "discussion life" of the site - I feel this is a strange introduction. Something like your first meeting at a twelve step program perhaps. A while back when the announcement was made about IGC, I thought that it would be great to go. But I was hesitant because I was intimidated by the talent of the line up of instructors and the talent of those who would be attending. Then I read the discussion thread with Aunt Lynnie and all the encouragement she received from the group. Someone mentioned that it was "not a competition" we all come to it with different levels and needs. Many of your comments and great support and encouragement from my wife (how can you not go - your going to meet Al Stewart she said) and I was signing up! Since belonging to the site, I have made a lot of progress, but probably consider myself somewhat of a "campfire" player but with a desire to break out of my plateau. I bought the recommended reading and recently started Neils fingerstyle 101 lessons. Now, I really know what I don't know!
So, I guess I will see a bunch of you in CA!

Chan, if you're a long time TARGET member, I would bet you're good to go skills-wise. And if you're not, I think you'll get a lot of help and support, not ridiculed. We tend to be much harder on ourselves than our listeners are.
Last week I visited a small music store tended by a graduating Jazz player in Performing Arts. I sat down and played for an hour. I went back yesterday and the young man told me he just signed up for classical lessons after watching me play last week. Right now you're asking the same question I am; what the hell about my playing makes someone want to take classical lessons? I honestly dunno.
I think we all will learn something from each other, regardless of how little we think we have to offer. And I think we'll all learn a ton from the pros. Welcome aboard, and I can't wait to meet you.
Dan

Welcome to the forum Chan!
And how great for you to have signed up at IGC, YOU'RE GOING TO MEET AL STEWART!! :cheer: Good for you!!
I'm glad that such a thread has helped you in making the decision to go. And it's indeed what the vibe of this site and forum is, supportive, friendly and just a great place to ask and/or answer all of your guitar-questions and so on.
Good luck with the preps for the camp, I'm sure it'll be a blast for anyone attending!
cheers
Vanessa

Thanks for all your welcoming comments:
Jim - I signed up for the IGC group - need to look into flights soon.
Dan - looking forward to meeting you and others also
Vanessa - meeting Al Stewart was our first reaction, but then Bonnie (my bride) googled Murial Anderson and exclaimed that watching her made her want to learn to play.

Since joining this site I have made significant progress and I'm sure it's all down to being encouraged by the community and by practicing Neils great lessons.
One of the great advantages of signing up for the camp is that I'm sure it will give you a greater incentive to practice, that can't be a bad thing now can it?
I am glad you were encouraged by your wife to go to camp, I am sure you will enjoy it.
See you there,

Hi Chan and welcome. I think it was me who mentioned it wasn't a competition. Lets face it, we are all at a particular level in our playing and should be working every day to improve our own level of ability. Someone else being better than you or I should encourage us to attain that degree of skill. The only way any of us can improve is to work hard consistantly.Hi Folks,

Tom makes the best point on this topic. I received a lot of encouragement from my wife too. She thinks I do great, and that I worry too much. I am nervous, but even more excited to go. When you mention a "campfire player", I just smiled. That is me right now. I even struggle with that sometimes, if the chords are a bit more exotic, or if I have to make pinky stretches...
However, becoming a campfire player was my goal when I signed up.
I am branching out a little these day and trying to learn new things and still get better at strumming. I figure this camp will be a good deal above my level, but I should learn a lot and get a chance to play with others that understand.

Thanks, and very glad to be going to the party. Awesome video clip of Al and Dave (would be a nice surprise). I need to get more of Al's music - only have his album from the mid 70's 'Past, Present, and Future' since college. Jason, nice to know I put a smile on your face
Hearing from everyone today, just makes it more interesting. Booked my ticket today, so I am ready to go :woohoo:

How pee'd off does AS look by DN's superb playing LOL??? I reckon I could happily strum chords to DN's playing too, although my voice wouldn't be half as good as AS! Magnificent acoustic playing. DN's Martin sounds like a classical???? Great tone from a steel string.
