David - I tried to find Dylan's version on YT but didn't have any luck. I would think his version has a touch of sarcasm like other of his love songs (Don't Think Twice for example). Although Lightfoot could be sarcastic too..."That's What You Get For Loving Me"

I just found a few videos of PP&M doing "Early Morning Rain". I was wrong. Both Peter and Paul play this in the key of G capoed at the 3rd fret. Chords are G(with Gsus4 hammer on at points), Am, and D7/F#. Paul stays off the 1st string for the most part (accenting the alternating bass), so Peter can play mostly on the first 2 or 3 strings to add the treble embellishments (hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides).

Hey Bill! That was fantastic. You really captured the wistful atmosphere of this song. I'm also not a great fan of the PPM version as it often seems to me that they were just cranking it out. But you made this come alive.

What arrangement do you have for recording your voice. I'm just listening on the little iPad speaker right now, but was impressed at how well you'd captured the vocals while obviously at some distance from the mic.

Thank you Stuart. I know what you mean about PPM's version. I really didn't care for Peter's part in the song. But I loved Paul's (especially because he sings more in my range). And of course I could watch and listen to Mary forever; may she rest in peace. But yeah, their version is a little bland.

As far as my recording set up...I use a Samson CO3U Condenser mic with the polar pattern set to super cardiod, the pad set to zero and the Hi-Pass filter set to flat. I use the DAW software that comes with the mic: "Sonar LE Cakewalk". The fx settings I use are: Cakewalk Compressor/Gate... preset "Breathe"; Cakewalk Studioverb2... preset "Small piano room"; Cakewalk ParaQ... preset "default".

If you don't know, condenser microphones are sensitive and you don't have to be right on top of them. One caveat is to use a Spider Shockmount to eliminate vibration noise.

Possibly by now you're thinking TMI :laugh: But you're the first on the forum to receive my mic and DAW secrets.
